Hey there! Today I thought it would be fun to share my plan to whip this house into shape one room at a time–starting with my January organization plan. My goal is to take on a room for one month moving throughout the house and finishing the year with the whole house organized! That way I can clean out cabinets and closets and really just concentrate on one area before moving onto another one.
I have a short attention span and in the past I have 5 projects started at once and it takes forever to finish them. This way I can see results as I go and I am hoping this keeps me motivated and on track.
This month my plan is the kitchen. It has seen some messy times over the past two months with Thanksgiving and Christmas! Oye! Late night cookie baking and the kids out of school are enough to wreak havoc any kitchen. But now that they are back in school I need this area to function so I can again become the Iron Chef when it’s dinnertime. (by the way, I love that show! Do you? All the fast pace and all those strange machines! It is so exciting!)
Okay! Back on track here, Piper. See what I mean…squirrel!
Where to start?
I already had a pretty good idea of areas that weren’t working in the kitchen, but just so I could stay focused, I took a notepad and pen and opened cabinets and drawers and started writing down areas that needed attention.
Here’s my list:
- Junk drawers
- pantry refresh (you can see how I organized this area last year here)
- under the sink area
- spice cabinet
Next, I make a list of items to help me whip these places into shape. Could be containers to corral like items or drawer organizers or even labels. Then, I go around to see if I have any of these items that are not being used. No need in buying duplicates of something I already have on hand.
If I don’t have what I am looking for to organize a specific space, I will measure the area. I can’t tell you how many times I have been out and found exactly what I need to organize a space and buy it only to find out it was too big to fit. Do you ever do that? I have learned the hard way if I measure the area and either keep the measurements in the Notes app on my phone or even just on a piece of paper in my purse I can reference it when I am out and about and see something that might work.
Here’s my list of supplies needed:
- drawer organizers (4) 9 1/2 inches wide
- tiered expandable tray for spices
- container for cleaning rags
- container for cleaners
Okay, now I have a plan of what I want to do and what I will need. Now, I need to figure out when is all this organizing going to happen. Unless it’s a job I can do while the kids do homework, then it needs to happen on the weekend. Same thing about buying the supplies. When am I going to get these supplies? I schedule it all! That way I have time marked off to do it and I find I get things done better when I have it scheduled. It’s much harder to find and excuse when I have it marked on my calendar.
Sometimes, I will not know what I need to organize a space until it is cleaned out. Like, for instance, my junk drawers. I have 4 drawers that are always messy. I know half of what is in them belongs some place else and they really have no specific purpose. They each need a purpose. It’s much easier to keep a space clean if everything has a home. So before I go out shopping, I will empty them all out and start from scratch.
Where to shop
January is a great time to organize. Sales are everywhere for organizational supplies! The Container Store has a large sale on their Elfa products and large tubs and containers are on sale as well. Target and Walmart have all their large tubs on sale as well. Also, don’t overlook Amazon. Even the Dollar Store is a great place for organizational tools. And their prices can’t be beat. Also, think outside the box. Maybe a pretty bowl can be used or a platter to corral like items, especially when they are left out on the counter.
Well, that’s it for my plan for January. Do you organize in January? Tell me what areas you plan on working in the comments below! Let’s motivate each other!
I plan on updating this post as I finish each area I mentioned above just so they will all be in one place and easy to find.
